TITLE: Bus Monitor

                                                                                                                                   

FLSA: Non-Exempt

 

 

 

 

GENERAL SUMMARY

 

Provides general assistance to students and bus drivers in fulfilling safe transportation of students to and from school.  Coordinates special needs, assists students, communicates with parents, and performs related tasks.  Reports to the Special Needs Transportation Supervisor and bus driver.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

Provides assistance to bus driver by monitoring activities of students being transported; informs driver of any behavior or other problems; completes discipline slips on disruptive students when necessary.

 

Assists students in getting onto and off of the bus; operates a wheel chair lift to assist handicapped students in getting onto and off of the bus; provides other appropriate assistance to handicapped students as required.

 

Keeps abreast of safety and first aid procedures related to the duties of the job.

 

Coordinates special needs of students with parents, driver and teachers.

 

Makes transportation/trips enjoyable for students through educational programs, group activities, etc.

 

Performs other related duties as required.

 

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

 

Education, Experience and Qualifications:

 

High school graduate.  Must be at least 18 years of age. Certified school bus driver with excellent motor vehicle driving record highly desirable. Experience in working with children and handicapped children preferred.  Must have an acceptable background check through SLED and a SC Driver’s license.

 

Knowledge:

 

Thorough knowledge of all state laws and regulations, and safety procedures pertaining to the safe transport of special needs students.  Operation of a school bus and equipment related to special needs student transportation.  Understands the limitations and hazards involved in operating assigned equipment.  Knowledgeable on the proper procedures for reporting student misbehavior and other problems, and equipment failure.  Knows the proper procedures for emergency situations.  Familiar with daily bus route and the location of schools and other landmarks.

 

Skills/Effort:

 

Has the ability to carry out duties in various conditions of weather and noise.  Is able to complete assigned tasks in a safe, timely, and effective manner.  Is capable of applying common sense understanding and independent judgment in the performance of prescribed duties and tasks.  Has the ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, supervisors, co-workers, and the general public.  Is able to handle

 

emergency situations in a calm and responsible manner.  Is able to work with children and handicapped students in an effective manner.

 

Working Conditions:

 

Work is conducted primarily on a school bus where one is required to ride in varying weather conditions which means exposure to conditions such as heat, cold, rain, humidity, etc., and at times to travel on poor road conditions.  Requires ability to work under a degree of stress related to duties that require constant attention and awareness, and the supervision of children.  Physical demands are related to the operation of wheelchair lift and lifting handicapped children onto and off of the bus.  Routine local travel is required in the transport of students to and from school; no overnight travel is required. 

 

Physical Performance Standards:

  1. Climb school bus steps 3 times in 30 seconds
  2. Open and close a manual bus door 3 times in 20 seconds
  3. Exit the vehicle via the emergency door in 20 seconds
  4. Drag a 125-pound object 30 feet in 30 seconds.

Drivers must also be able to:

  1. Alternate between accelerator and service brake 10 times in 10 seconds
  2. Press and hold the service brake for 60 seconds.

 

Responsibility:

 

No budgetary responsibility. 

Supervises students riding bus.
