JOB DESCRIPTION

 

TITLE: Maintenance – First Shift

                                                                                                                                 

FLSA:   Non-Exempt

 

SUMMARY:

This is a semi-skilled employee who is directly involved in routine tasks associated with cleaning and maintaining buildings and grounds. The work involves cleaning, use of soaps, chemicals, waxes, and the use of various machines and equipment associated with custodian work. Minor maintenance repair to the equipment, machines and building is expected. Work is reviewed through routine inspection and evaluation of the appearance and cleanliness of assigned work areas. Custodial work can be assigned to group or individual activity. This person will report to the Supervisor of Maintenance.

 

                               

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Clean floors, windows, fixtures, stairs, restrooms and doors with brooms, mops, brushes, and cloths; must be able to reach high spaces by positioning and using a step stool or ladder.
  • Prepares floors for waxing by first using stripper and water solution, removing old wax from floors using side-by-side machine and/or scrapes corners, edges, and doorways to remove dirt/wax, and then applying new wax. Buffs waxed floors by using power buffers.
  • To operate various machines such as buffers, vacuum cleaners (various kinds including back-pack vacuums), carpet machines, lawn mower, etc.
  • To move various things such as trash containers, furniture, equipment, books, lunchroom tables, materials, and various supplies; must empty large rolling trash cans when full by disposing of trash in outside container.
  • Perform routine maintenance such as replacing light bulbs, fuses, starters, pencil sharpeners, etc.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of supplies for assigned work area.
  • Perform general manual labor incidental to school/location operation.
  • Maintain school grounds by removing debris, trimming shrubs, cutting grass and related tasks
  • Open and/or close and secure buildings and raise and/or lower flags.
  • Availability for duty in the event the district has made the building available for use by the public.
  • Perform related work as required and other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Follow safety rules and procedures, including wearing required personal protective equipment.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience:

  • High school graduate or equivalent, with one to two years of demonstrated aptitude for successful performance of the job duties; prior custodial and general maintenance experience preferred.
  • Part-time and 2nd Shift internal employees are encouraged to apply.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of custodial operations and general maintenance procedures.
  • Knowledge of the policies, procedures and activities of the organization as they pertain to the specific duties of the job.
  • Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, tools, equipment and supplies used within grounds and building maintenance, and cleaning activities.
  • Knowledge of the occupational and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Knowledge of the proper and safe use of equipment, tools and materials necessary for assignment completion.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, procedures, materials and supplies, and general maintenance repairs.
  • Knowledge of effective cleaning methods and safe handling and use of related equipment, supplies, agents, etc.

Skills/Effort:

  • Ability to read and write, and to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform manual work requiring some physical strength and agility.  
  • Ability to work well with supervisor, co-workers and the general public.
  • Ability to use and care for a variety of cleaning and landscaping agents, materials and equipment
  • Ability to perform general maintenance independent of regular duties and/or area of assignment.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is conducted both indoors and outdoors with occasional exposure to discomforting environmental conditions such as heat, cold, humidity, noise, electrical hazards, dusts and wetness. Frequent contact with strong cleaning agents. Moderately heavy physical exertion is frequently required to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
